Jay Rayner is an award-winning writer and broadcaster, best known for his work as a Masterchef judge & restaurant critic for the Observer. He is a former Critic of the Year and Restaurant Critic of the Year. In 2018 he was named Restaurant Writer of The Year in the Fortnum and Mason Food and Drink Awards. October 4th 2018 sees Jay publish his tenth book, Wasted Calories and Ruined Nights: A Journey Deeper into Dining Hell. A wickedly entertaining collection of 20 of Jay Rayner’s most unfortunately memorable dining experiences from recent years, including Le Cinq, Beast and Farm Girl Café.
In a recent survey of journalists and the public by UK Press Gazette Jay was voted the most influential food and drink journalist in Britain. He performs live all over the country, both with his one man shows and as a pianist with his jazz ensemble, The Jay Rayner Quartet. He is a regular on British television, where he is familiar as a judge on MasterChef and, since 2012 has been the chair of BBC Radio 4’s food panel show The Kitchen Cabinet.
